The charts demonstrate the four categories of citrus fruits – oranges, lemons, grapefruits, and other type and the top three countries to which these were exported in thousand tonnes in 2012.
Overall, South Africa exported the greatest amount of oranges, while Turkey was the leading destination for lemons and grapefruits . In contrast , Mexico received the largest quantity of other citrus fruits , whereas the United States and Israel imported negligible amounts of this category.
Regarding oranges , South Africa exported approximately 1,000 thousand tonnes, compared with about 900 thousand tonnes from Egypt and 700 thousand tonnes from the USA . For lemons, ranked first at roughly 500 thousand tonnes followed by Mexico at around 450 thousand, whereas Argentina accounted for about 250 thousand tonnes.
Turkey was also the largest importer of grapefruits , at approximately 170 thousand tonnes, while South Africa and the United States imported around 80 and 70 thousand tonnes respectively. Finally, Mexico dominated other citrus exports , receiving about 450 thousand tonnes , while the figures for the United States and Israel were both around 10 thousand tonnes.
