In 1997, India had the highest number of elephants, approximately 1000. However. This figure decreased significantly by nearly 2000 in 2004. Similarly, the number of China elephants was reported at about 1000 in 1997 and fell by half within seven years. Especially, the number of Vietnam and Laos elephants was quite similar in both two years, the figures reached over 1000 in 1997 and roughly 900 in 2004.
After India, Myanmar had the second-largest number of elephants with nearly 6000 in 1997 and about 5000 in 2004. Regarding Malaysia and Thailan, countries that saw the most significant change in their elephant population. In 1997, the number of Malaysia and Thailan elephants was about 3000 and approximately 4000 respectively before reducing to about 1000 and roughly 1100 in 2004. Sri Lanka recorded about 3000 elephants in 1997 and roughly 2900 elephants in 2004. Cambodia was a nation that protected, nurtured elephants and was the best when reaching over 1000 elephants in 1997 and this figure increased slight by roughly 200 elephants.
