The table and pie charts show the percentage of customers using different types of websites when shopping online and the reasons why they shop online in Australia and New Zealand in 2012.
Overall, the majority of customers used both overseas and local websites in both countries. Lower prices were the main reason for shopping online in both countries, while convenience was the second most common reason in Australia, and a wider range of choices ranked second in New Zealand.
Looking first at the pie charts, 64% of Australians and 50% of New Zealanders used both local and overseas websites. However, fewer Australians used overseas websites only, at 24%, while the figure for New Zealanders stood at 36%. Lastly, 12% of Australians tended to use local websites only, whereas 14% of New Zealanders opted for this type of website.
Turning to the table, lower prices were the most popular reason, cited by 59% of Australians and 51% of New Zealanders. The convenience of online shopping ranked second in Australia, at 23%, while the figure for New Zealand was 13%. In New Zealand, the second most popular reason was the larger range of choices, at around 34%, compared to 16% in Australia. Finally, other reasons accounted for 2% in both countries.
