Overall, the proportion of families with one and two individuals increased, the opposite was for other sized families. In addition, 2-individual households were the most popular in the UK in both years.
In 1981, the families owned by two individuals was the highest percentage (31%), compared to 20% of households owned by 3 individuals. 1-person and 4-person households made up similar percentages, at 17% and 18% respectively, while the figure for 5-person and 6-person households only at 8% and 6%.
By 2001, the proportion of 1 and 2 members in families steadily increased to 26% and 34% respectively. By contrast, The UK witnessed a slight decrease in the percentages of all other sized households, with 3-person dropping to 17% and 4-person households dropping to 15%. 5 and 6-person members in families had the lowest proportion, standing only at 6% and 2% respectively.
