The pie chart illustrates the reasons (over-grazing, over-cultivation, deforestation, and other) of worldwide land degradation. Also, there is given the table about causes of land degradation in North America, Europe, and Oceania during 1990s. It can be noticed that over-grazing is the main consequence of degradation not only in Oceania, but worldwide with 35%.
In North America most of the land degradated by over-cultivation and showed 3.3% of damage, while over-grazing is less for two times – 1.5%. The large amount of grazings also affected lands of Europe and got 5.5%, but the greates amount was fixed in Oceania – 11.3%. It is double higher than in Europe and almost ten times more than in North America.
It should be noted that there was no degradated land in Oceania due to the over-cultivation. While in Europe this cause of land degradation took the second place with 7.7%. In 1990s, the highest level of degradated land was fixed in Europe and reached 23%.
In addition, the main cause of land degradation in Europe is the deforestation (9.8%). It was the second main reason of land degradation in the world, its portion got 30%. Also significant portion of degradation in a worldwide level was because of the over-cultivation – 28%. Other reasons were only 7%.
