The chart illustrates the ages at which Australian women had their first child in the years 1966, 1986 and 2006.
Overall, the graph shows that there was little change in the age of women giving birth to their first child across the three time scales where the 19-24 age group dominated in 1966 and experienced a sharp decline while the 30-34 age group increased significantly and became the largest group in 2006.
In the beginning, the number of ages show increasing in 3 decades. Women aged 25-30 experienced an upward trend from approximately 36% in 1996 to 50% in 1986 even though it will decrease slightly to 38% in 2006. Meanwhile, the more striking trends were visible at 30-34 which was initially just 13% in 1966 then increasing to 18% at 1986 before it rocket to 45% in 2006. This was also seem at 34-39 ages which was less than 5% in 1966 getting a surge to 12% in 1986 and achieving 30% in 2006. Meanwhile, percentage of women who give birth aged 40 years and above relatively small throughout the period, but it still experienced a slight rise form 2% in 1966 to around 5% in 2006. In addition, the lowest trend was the women aged over 40 in 1986 under 5%.
However, women aged under 19 experienced went down from around 34% in first period to 20% in the second period and in the continue decreasing until 2006. Beside that, teenagers around ages 19-24 reached the peak movement in the beginning afterwards experienced a drop nearly 40% in the second period and the movement went down until nearly 30% in the third period.
