The bar chart provides details about library loans in shared libraries in the UK between 1995 and 2005.
Overall, it can be seen that the borrowing of library materials diminished throughout a 10-year period. It is also clear that 1995 was a year when the number of items borrowed from libraries exhibited higher figures than other years.
In 1995, adult fiction stood at 330 million but this was followed by a slight decline to 280 in 2000, after which this figure saw a further drop to 230 million in 2005. After dipping dramatically from 1,113 million in 1995 to 161 million in 2000, the figure for adult non-fiction declined farther to 110 million in 2005.
Despite a negligible rise from 107 million in 1995 to 114 million in 2000, children’s books recorded a slight decline to 104 million by the final year. The figure for top audio-visual material, on the other hand, increased steadily over the period. Starting at just 28 million in the initial year, top audio-visual material rose to 33 million in 2000, a figure that than increased markedly to 60 million in 2005.
