The line graph shows data about population trends in Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane from 1992 to 2016. Overall, population sizes in all three major cities fluctuated throughout the period. In addition, after 2004, Melbourne and Sydney’s population grew exponentially, with Melbourne ending up as the most densely populated city. Brisbane’s population growth was not as pronounced as that of the other two cities, culminating with the lowest population figure.
Sydney started the period with the highest population at around 30,000. In contrast, Melbourne’ population was the lowest at approximately 22,000. Brisbane’s population size was slightly higher than Melbourne’s, with roughly 23,000 people living in the city. In 2004, Sydney experienced a dramatic drop to about 20,000 after reaching over 60,000 three years earlier, while Melbourne experienced relative stability from 2001 to 2004. Subsequently, Sydney population bounced back to just over 80,000, while almost 100,000 people resided in Melbourne two years later. Brisbane also experienced a huge surge in population, with around 61,000.
Around 2012, the proportion of population in every country saw a sharp decline, with around 70,000, 58,000, and 40,000 citizens registered in Melbourne and Sydney, and Brisbane, respectively. At the end of the period the population figures in Melbourne and Sydney exceeded 100,000, while Brisbane population, despite a noticeable increase, ended with half as much as Melbourne and Sydney.
