The bar chart compares information about the share of Australian women in six different age ranges when they gave birth to their first child in the years 1966, 1986, and 2006.
It can be clearly seen that the age which Australian women have their first child has gradually shifted towards older age cohorts over the time period.
Focusing first at categories of women at 20-24 and under 19, in 1966, they were the only group witnessed a significant decline over the period surveyed, starting at 36% and 62% before decreasing to 11% and 30%, respectively. In contrast, women at age from 25 to 29 data began at 38% before fluctuating in upward trajectory, from 38% to 42% at the end of the time frame. Although this experienced a modest increase, its data surpassed that of women at age 20-24 and ranked first.
Turning to remaining groups, most increased significantly in 2006, with the exception of 40+ categories, which increased modestly. Groups of women at age 30-34 and 35-39 give birth their first child all saw booms, from 12% and 8% to 48% and nearly 40% at the end of the time frame, in that order. By 1986, 40+ category slightly increase by 4%, from 1% to 5% in 2006
