Overall, it is clear that females had higher literacy rates than males in all regions. Additionaly, developed countries recorded the lowest literacy levels on both genders.
In developed countries, illiteracy rates were negligible, accounting for only about 1% of males and approximately 2% of females. Similarly, Latin America and the Caribbean also recorded relatively low figures, with aroun 10% of men and about 12% of women being illeterate. In East Asia and Ocenia, the rates were slightly higher, at roughly 8% for men and 20% for females.
By contrast, illiteracy rates were significantly higher in Sub-Sarahan Africa, the Arab states and South Asia. In Sub-Sarahan Africa, 30% of males were illirate, compared to nearly 49% of females. The persentage of genders in Arab states compared to 29% of men and 52% of female lacked basic literacy skills. The South Asia recorded the highest rates overal with about nearly 33% of males and roughly 55% of femals being illeterate.
