The line graph illustrates the proportions of five different Internet browsers in the market from 2007 to 2014. Overall, while other categories stabilized or witnessed a decreasing trajectory over the period, the percentage of Chrome increased significantly and accounted for the highest proportion nearly all the time.
Chrome, which was the browser having the most dramatic growth among the six categories, ranked third at only 23% in 2011. In the next two years, it rose remarkably and surpassed Firefox and Internet Explorer, respectively, becoming the highest figure. The share of Chrome continued to grow and reached its peak at 73% in 2019, before dropping slightly to around 70% at the end.
As for those experiencing a decreasing pattern, nearly 50% of the market share was of Internet Explorer, followed by Firefox at the second place with 13% lower. While the percentage of Internet Explorer plummeted to its trough in 2021 at around 2%, becoming the least popular browser, that of Firefox witnessed a gradual decline to 13% over the period.
Regarding the three remaining browsers, Safari, Opera, and Edge were the three least common at lower than 10% in 2011. Until 2021, while the proportion of Safari and Opera went up marginally to 15% and 6%, respectively, that of Edge jumped from 0% to 13% in 2021, nearly one-sixth of Chrome, which was the highest at the same year.
