Overall, car ownership increased steadily in all four countries between 2000 and 2020. While all countries experienced growth, the USA remained the leading country in terms of car ownership, whereas Japan had the lowest.
In 2000, USA had the highest car ownership at 75 %, while Australia also started at 75%. In 2010, USA had increased to 78%, although Autsralia had not changed. By 2020,USA rose to 82% and peaked also Australia rose to 77%. Overall,USA had the highest proportion among the four countries
Japan and the UK had the lowest proportions of households owning cars throughout the period. In 2000, UK started at 64 % while Japan at 58%. In 2010, UK increased to 68%, however, Japan at 62%. By 2020, UK rose to 71 % while Japan rose to 67%.
