This illustration gives information about the proportion of households with a car in Japan, the USA, the UK, and Australia in 2000, 2010, and 2020. Overall, it can be observed that car ownership rose in all countries during the period. The USA and Australia consistently recorded the highest levels, while Japan had the lowest figures throughout.
At the beginning of the period in 2000, around three-quarters of households in both the USA and Australia owned a car, compared to roughly two-thirds in the UK and just over 60% in Japan. Over the following decade, ownership in Japan and the UK increased moderately, reaching approximately 65% and 68% in 2010. Meanwhile, the USA and Australia remained relatively stable at around 77-78%.
By 2020, car ownership in the USA climbed further to about 83%, making it the highest among the four countries. A similar upward trend was seen in Australia, where the figure reached nearly 80%. The UK also rose steadily to just over 70%, while Japan showed the slowest growth but still achieved around 67% by the end of the period.
