The data illustrates the proportion of Irish language speakers by province in the Republic of Ireland in five different years.
In the State, during 1981 the average percentage was just over 30%, from then on the proportion kept increased year after year and reached its peak in 2002 with over 40%. The lowest percentage of Irish speakers in the cities were, Leinster with around 22% in 1986; Munster with around 34% in 1981; Connacht with around 37% in 1981 and Ulster with approximately 30% in 1981. The highest proportion of Irish speakers in the cities were, Leinster with around 37%; Munster with just over 45%; Connacht with approximately 48% and Ulster with above 40%. In all the cities, the Irish speakers kept increasing significantly every year, except for Leinster the percentage declained to around 26% during 1986 and for Ulster the proportion decreased to around 29% during 1986.
Hence, the percentage of Irish language speakers by province in the Rebublic of Ireland were mostly with a positive trend.
