The bar chart below shows the proportion of women’s age when they had their first child in three years 1966, 1986 and 2006.
Overall, the percentage of women giving birth to their first child ages 19-24 was the highest in 1966 and had a downward trend till 2006. Meanwhile, the opposite was true for that of women aged over 40 whose had the lowest figure in three years.
To clarify, in 1966, the proportion of women aged 19-24 was the highest with 62% which almost doubled that of women aged under 19 with 35%. Then, the percentage of women aged 19-24 and under 19 having their first child decreased to 35% and 20% in 1986 for the former and the latter. In 2006, that of women aged 19-24 and under 19 kept falling to 29% and 10%, respectively. Futhermore, the proportion of women having their first child at ages 25-30 in 1966 was 35% then it skyrocketed to 50% which was the highest in 1986, then it dropped to 40% in 2006.
In addition, the rate of women aged 30-34 witnessed an upward trend from 15% in 1966 then skyrocketed to 45% in 2006, nearly three times the initial figure. Moreover, in 1966, the proportion of women aged 34-39 was 8% and 5% for women aged over 40. In 1986, the proportion of women aged over 40 dropped to the lowest point of the year with 2% while that of women aged 34-39 rose to 15%. In the final year, the percentage of women aged 34-39 increased twofold to 30% and women aged over 40 rose to 5%.
