Presented in the line graph is the comparison of how many shops opened and closed annually in one country from 2011 to 2018. Overall, although both showed fluctuation, closures were always higher than openings except in 2011 and 2015.
Around 6500 shops were closed in the first year. The figure started dropping 500 to 6000 before having a rebound of peak 2 years after, standing at 7000. However, by 2015, closings saw less outlets with the number of approximate 500 and then rose back to 10 times from the previous position, later remaining constant until the end of the period.
By contrast, openings stood at 8500, well above that of closures in 2011. Although erratically fluctuating between 4000 and 6000, the number managed to had a similar trend of surpassing closed outlets in 2015. It was not until 2018 that openings had declined after 3 years of leveling off, in which not only was it the lowest point, but also halved by the number of closures.
