The line chart illustrates the percentage of area in four different countries that was covered by forest over a four-decade period.
In general, it can be seen that England and Scotland remained largely forested for the past 400 years, but in 1950, the population started to move to this land. France showed fluctuating trends. In contrast, the United States had the highest forest coverage, at around 50 percent, in 1600.
To begin with, the United States in the 16th century was heavily forested, with 50 percent of the land covered by trees. However, a decline in forest coverage can be seen until 1900. France had almost 30% forest coverage in 1600, thereafter it showed a rapid decrease as more land was colonized, but an upward trend can be noticed after 1850. Scotland remained largely constant for 3 centuries, but after 1950, urbanization started in that country.
In conclusion, most of the area is still covered by forest, but it can be seen that the colonies are moving into these areas, and the population is growing in each countries.
