The bar chart compares the number of kilometers, in billions, traveled by passengers on five modes of transportation in the UK in two separate years, as well as the total distance traveled. Overall, changes were minimal across all types of transportation, resulting in a small increase in the total distance. While increases were observed in air, bus, and rail, decreases occurred in bicycle and motorbike. Notably, bus and rail remained by far the most popular means of transportation in both years.
The distance traveled by bicycle, motorbike, and air was significantly lower compared to other modes of transportation. In 1990, bicycles covered around 7 billion kilometers while motorbikes traveled slightly more at around 7 billion kilometers. By the second year, both means of transportation had declined to around 5 billion kilometers. In contrast, air travel increased from about 4 billion kilometers to roughly 7 billion kilometers, showing an upward trend.
The distance covered by bus and rail was orders of magnitude higher. The former accounted for around 47 billion kilometers in 1990, before rising to a whopping 49 billion kilometers in 2000. The latter ended at the same amount, though it started from a lower level of around 45 billion kilometers in 1990. As a result of these changes, the total distance increased from approximately 110 billion kilometers to about 115 billion kilometers.
