The statistics illustrate total teenage students in an English-speaking country with regard to their choice for 3 different languages from 1984 to 2007. Overall, during the assessed years, both girls and boys witnessed a downward trend. Alongside this, Spanish was repositioned to the second popular language in use at the end of the period.
Looking first at the proportion of the gender in studying modern foreign language, the figures for girls registered a slight decrease from about 10% of students to approximately 53% in 2007. A similar pattern can be seen in boys’ proportion which declined 5% to exactly 40%.
Moving on the percentage of three most famous languages, French recorded a minimal drop from about 15 % to exactly 50%. A reverse pattern can be seen in Spanish which increased about 10% of students. Meanwhile, Germany’s proportion still remained the same at around 15% of students over a 23-year period.
