The pie charts below illustrate the proportions of residential water use in the years 1988 and 2008.
It is noticeable that bathroom and washing accounted for the largest proportion of household consumption in both years, while the water used for gardens declined noticeably over time. Moreover, usage of water in kitchens increased markedly, whereas toilet use experienced minor changes.
In 1988, washing consumed the largest proportion of water with 32%, although it declined slightly to 22% in 2008. At the beginning of the period water usage in kitchens accounted for only 15%, but this figure experienced a sharp increase in 2008 and became the largest household consumption with 29%. Additionally, water use for toilets fell slightly over the period, declining from 18% in 1988 to just 14% in 2008.
Turning to the remaining categories, water consumption for bathrooms rose marginally from 22% in 1988 to 28% in 2008. Furthermore, gardens accounted for 20% use of water in 1988, but decreased dramatically to 7% twenty years later.
