The above two charts show the percentage of households owning electrical appliances and the number of hours of housework per week in households.
The number of refrigerators in households was close to zero in 1920, but increased very quickly over the next 40 years. By 1960, 90% of the households owned a refrigerator and by 2000, this number became almost 100%. The number of Vaccum cleaners in households in 1920 was 30% and increased at a consistent rate till 2000 and became 100%. The number of washing machines was 30% in 1920 and increased to 70% in 1960 and decreased till 1980. Then the number increased gradually to 75% in 2019.
In 1920, on average, there were 50 hours of household per week and the number decreased rapidly till 1960 when the number was 20 hours. Then the number decreased gradually and the value in 2019 was 10 hours per week.
The has been a direct co-relation between the number of appliances and household work. With the increase in household appliances, hours of household work decreased over the decades.
