From the chart, we can clrealy see that the vacuum cleaner became the most used appliance over time, while the refrigerator started with low usage but increased significantly.
In 1920, the washing machine was the most common, with 40% of households owning one. The vacuum cleaner was used by 30%, and the refrigerator was the least used at just 1%. By 1960, refrigerators had become the most popular, with 90% ownership. Both washing machines and vacuum cleaners were at 70% ownership then. Refrigerators reached 100% usage in 1980 and stay unchanged until 2000 when vacuum cleaners also reached 100% usage.
At first, the time spent on housework was 50 hours per week in 1920. It dropped to 20 hours per week by 1960 and decreased steadily. By 2019, the time spent on housework went down to just 10 hours per week.
