The first chart represents the number of Japanese tourists travelling to foreign countries from 1985 to 1995, and the second chart illustrates Australia’s share of the Japanese tourist market.
The number of Japanese tourists travelling abroad rises steadily over the 10-year period, except the slight decrease between 1990 and 1991. In 1995, the number of visitors was three times as one decade ago, which was approximately 15.8 million.
In those countries that Japanese tourists visit, Australia accounted for 2% in 1985. The percentage grew rapidly to almost 5% in 1988, then dropped to about 4% in 1989. From 1989 to 1993, the rate went up and reached a peak of 6.1% in 1993. In 1994, the percentage fell again and held the share about 6%.
We can conclude from these two charts that there is an increasing interest among Japanese travelers to travel abroad, and Australia’s share of the market also rises.
