The bar graph illustrates the volume of Japanese citizens visiting abroad from 1885 to 1995 while the line chart displays the share of these tourists traveling to Australia during the same decade.
Overall, tourism abroad from Japan experienced a significant rise over the years. As from the line chart, the percentage of Japanese tourists traveling to Australia also increased substantially.
The number of Japanese residents travelling out of the country grew steadily year on year, starting at around 5 million in 1885 to nearly 11 million in 1990, almost doubling. A slight decrease in the figures was observed in 1991 to just above 10 million before continuing back to the upward trend in 1992 and peaking at approximately 15 million by the end of the period.
The proportion of these Japanese visitors welcomed by Australia increased dramatically from 2% in 1885 to more than double, nearly 5%, in 1988. This was followed by a slight drop to just over 4% in 1989 before plunging back and increasing year on year to just over 6% in 1994.
