The two bar charts illustrate how many people were born in Australia and other countries accommodating in cities, towns and rural areas in 1950 and 2010.
Overall, the proportion of people born outside Australia living in the cities hit the peak in both years. Additionally, the number of people living in towns and rural areas witnessed a dramatic fall in the year 2010.
Looking first at people living in the cities, the figure for this remained the highest of the two charts in both years. In 1950, 50% of residents in Australia and 60% of people from other nations lived in the cities. In 2010, the respective figure increased to 60% and 80%. It is notable that the percentage of inhabitants outside Australia reached its peak in both years.
Regarding those who lived in towns and countryside, this category’s figure was much lower than the cities. There were more people both in and outside Australia living in rural areas in 1950, particularly those living outside, with dramatic disparities. However, the percentage of residents living in these two areas significantly decreased in 2010, hovering around the 10% mark.
