Overall, agriculture and services witnessed a decrease of their shares in four represented countries while industry’s share increased in all represented countries, except for China. Notably, industry accounted for the largest shares of workers in all countries, except for China where agriculture took the lead.
As regards to agriculture, about 70% of employees in China worked in this sector in 1980. In 2010, in turn, the percentage of the Chinese employed in agriculture decreased and stood at 50% while the shares of three other countries did not exceed 12% in both recorded years.
Regarding industry, Germany took the lead in 1980 and had about 60% in this sector, while the USA and Japan accounted for around 50% of such workers and China stood at 40%. In 2010, both Germany and Japan experienced an increase and reached about 80% of employees in industry while the USA had about 70% of workers in the sector. Notably, the data for China remained the same in 2010, at 40%.
Turning to the services sector in 1980, Germany, China and the USA accounted for about 50% of workers in this field, however Japan had about 40% of the workers in the sector in 1980. Meanwhile, shares of all countries decreased in this sector in 2010, with Germany and the USA having about 40% of workers and the shares of Japan and China not exceeding 30%.
