The two pie charts illustrate the proportion of consumer spending across seven different sectors in 2009 and 2019.
Overall, the single largest proportion of the budget was spent on Food and Drink in both years. However, the most significant shift over the decade was a substantial increase in expenditure on leisure and technology, coupled with a major reduction in spending on Transport.
In both 2009 and 2019, Food and Drink accounted for the biggest share of the budget, though its proportion dropped slightly from 42% to 39%. Conversely, Transport saw the most dramatic fall, decreasing by ten percentage points from 22% in 2009 to just 12% in 2019. Spending on Furniture also fell marginally, dropping from 10% to 8%.
The biggest rise was recorded in the Entertainment sector, which more than doubled its share from 8% in 2009 to 19% in 2019, making it the second-largest category. Spending on Smartphones also increased significantly, rising from 6% to 10% over the ten-year period. Meanwhile, expenditure on Clothes remained relatively stable, with a marginal increase from 10% to 11%. Finally, the smallest category, Books, was halved, decreasing from 2% to only 1% of total consumer expenditure.
