The charts illustrate proportion of 9 types of waste disposed in a particular country in two different years, between 1960 and 2011.
Overall, in 1960 paper was the most disposed type of waste, which was overtaken by food and plastic in 2011.
There proportion of paper waste accounted for 25% in 1960, whereas the number fell by 10% in 2011(15%). Textile was another big waste type with 17% dropping to 11% in 2011. The figure with the smallest percentage of waste was for wood with 4% which doubled in 2011.
In 2011 people started wasting food more than 5 decades ago so the food waste led the list with 21% overtaking plastic which jumped up to 18% accounting only 8% in 1960. Green waste and glass were two types of waste which stayed constant in both years with 9% and 5% respectively. Metal waste also remained relatively stable with the rise of 1% in 2011, from 8% to 9%. The figure for “other” type of waste saw a decrease from 12% to 4%.
