The pie charts illustrate the principal means of transportation for people commuting to university for work or bus in two years, 2004 and 2009. Overall, it can be clearly observed that the majority of people in 2004 preferred to travel by car whereas, in 2009, it was replaced by the bus as the most popular way of commuting to the university.
Most noticeably of all, just over half of all the university commuters (51%) preferred to travel by car. However, the percentage of people relying on cars decreased drastically by almost half to 28% over the five-year period. Meanwhile, buses developed into the most common way of transportation and over the same period, it registered a significant rise from 33% to 46%.
In 2004, less than one in ten university commuters chose bicycle as their favorite way of traveling but over the five-year period, the proportion rose twofold and reached 16% mark in 2009. Speaking of other two means of transportation, people relying on trains and ones choosing to walk made up a tiny minority of all the university commuters, at 3% and 4% respectively. From 2004 to 2009, they witnessed a modest rise but still represented a tiny proportion of people traveling to university.
