The charts compare the most popular film genres among men and women in the USA in 2010 and show the proportion of box-office revenue generated by each genre.
Overall, action films were by far the most popular genre for men and also accounted for the largest share of ticket sales, whereas women showed a strong preference for romantic comedies. Thriller and comedy attracted moderate interest from both genders.
In terms of preferences, around 40% of men favoured action movies, compared with just over 30% of women. Comedy was the second most popular genre for both groups, chosen by approximately 25% of men and 30% of women. By contrast, romantic comedies were far more appealing to women, at about 30%, while only around 5% of men preferred this genre. Thriller and western films were less popular overall, each attracting roughly 10% or fewer viewers.
Regarding box-office takings, action films dominated, generating 49% of total revenue. Comedy and romantic comedy contributed 34% and 12% respectively, while thrillers and other genres together made up only a small proportion of sales.
