The bar chart illustrates the popularity of six film genres among men and women in the USA in 2010, while the pie chart shows the distribution of total box-office revenue by genre in the same year.
Overall, action films were the most popular genre among men and also generated the largest share of ticket sales, whereas women showed a clear preference for romantic comedies. Despite these differences in viewing preferences, action and comedy films dominated overall box-office takings.
In terms of preferences, approximately 40% of men favoured action movies, compared with about 25% of women. Comedy ranked second for both groups, attracting around 20% of viewers among men and women alike. Romantic comedies, however, were far more appealing to women, accounting for roughly 30% of their preferences, while only about 5% of men chose this genre. Thriller, science fiction and western films were less popular overall, each drawing around 10% or fewer viewers, with science fiction being the least preferred genre among women.
Turning to box-office revenue, action films dominated ticket sales, accounting for nearly half of total earnings. Comedy contributed just under a quarter of revenue, while romantic comedies generated around 12%. Thriller and other film types together made up only a small proportion of total box-office takings.
