The pie charts illustrate the percentage of accessible Japan’s water resources, such as, river/lakes, groundwater, glaciers and seawater, distributed in 2000, 2010 and 2020. The table compares how much water people used during these years.
Overall, seawater was the main source in Japan during all years, but it is share gradually decrease over time. On the other hand, rivers and lakes show the least significant water resource. Additionally, annual water consumption went up between 2000 and 2020.
According to the pie charts, between 2000 and 2010, seawater came the most important water source with about slightly less than three quarters, which increased in 2020 to 66%.
Glaciers made up a smaller, but still important portion, around a fifth, that increased to a quarter in 2020, respectively. At the same time, rivers/lakes and groundwater played a much smaller role, together accounting around a tenth percentage of the total, over a twenty-year period of time.
When it comes to annual water consumption, people were using just over 60 gallons in 2000. This number grew steadily, increasing to just over three quarters in 2010 and reached nearly 100 gallons in 2020.
