The presented diagram illustrates the process of the carbon cycle, demonstrating how carbon dioxide is exchanged among the atmosphere, plants, animals, fossil fuels.
As can be seen, CO2 continuously circulates through natural processes such as photosynthesis, animal & plant respiration and decomposition, as well as human activities like fossil fuel combustion. As regards atmosphere, it acts as a intermediary where carbon dioxide is being stored, absorbed and released.
According to the data, gas in the atmosphere is absorbed by plants through photosynthesis with help of sunlight. Whereupon, plants release a portion of carbon dioxide along with oxygen back into the air through respiration. Likewise, animals obtain carbon by consuming plants and release carbon dioxide as a result of breathing. Moreover, both animals and plants participate in the cycles through decomposition after death, storing carbon underground as fossils and fossil fuels.
Humans also play a significant role in the cycle. Fossil fuels extracted from the earth are burned in factories, after which, large amounts of carbon dioxide along with other gases are released into the atmosphere
