The given diagram depicts the evolution of the horse and it’s hoof over million of years.
Overall, the horses had undergone four stages in their evolution. Besides, their hoof broadened and have increased their size over the million years.
The first horse species of pre historic period was termed Eohippus, which had mainly four long flanches on their foot. The next stage of evolution was around 30 million years ago, they are known as Mesohippus, which had a larger body looks similar to the modern day horses. They had three toes and one is bigger than the other two.
By 15 million years ago, the Merychippus had emerged, they had also increased in size along with the middle toe among the three. Finally emerges the modern day horse with all it’s features. They have full mane, long tale, and good height. Ultimately, the toes together joined have become single hoof which is very much needed to support the whole body of the horse.
