The diagram illustrates the transformation of the Central Library’s floor plan over the past 20 years, revealing significant changes in the layout and allocation of space.
The two floor plans demonstrate a notable shift in the library’s design, with various areas being repurposed or replaced to accommodate changing needs and technologies.
One of the most striking differences between the two layouts is the relocation and repurposing of various sections. For instance, the area previously dedicated to children’s books has been converted into a lecture room, while the space housing CDs, videos, and computer games has been expanded and transformed into an area for storytelling events and fiction books.
Furthermore, the removal of tables and chairs has resulted in a more open-plan design. The adult fiction section has been relocated from the left to the right side of the passage, accompanied by self-service machines and an information desk. Additionally, a new area has been created for all reference books, and the reading room and enquiry desk have been replaced by a computer room and café, respectively, reflecting the evolving needs of the library’s patrons.
