The diagram illustrates a marked transformation in the central library’s floor plan over a 20-year period. Overall, the most significant change was the inclusion of various types of technology.
The library has substantially expanded its technological facilities. The small room previously designed for CDs, videos, and computer games has been replaced by a larger and more spacious area, which is now used for storytelling events, with two cozy sofas on different sides, and children’s fiction books. The reading room for newspapers and magazines was also affected by technological modernization and has been converted into a computer room. Furthermore, the room that previously contained adult non-fiction books has been modernized, and it is now furnished with an information desk and self-service machines.
With regard to the area for adult fiction books, this section has greatly broadened its purpose and now includes all reference books. The children’s books area has now been turned into a lecture room, while the enquiry desk for tickets and book returns has simply been replaced by a café to provide a more comfortable place to stay. Another clearly visible difference is that twenty years ago the centre of the library contained two tables with chairs, which are no longer present today.
In conclusion, the central library’s floor plan has been completely redesigned to better serve the needs of a modern community.
