The diagram shows the life cycle of the Monarch butterfly from the egg stage to the adult stage.
Overall, the life cycle has four main stages: egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, and adult butterfly. The process takes several weeks, while the adult butterfly lives much longer than the other stages.
First, the adult butterfly lays eggs on milkweed plants. This egg stage lasts about 14 days. After that, the eggs hatch and become caterpillars. During this stage, the caterpillar eats leaves and grows quickly. This stage takes around 10 days.
Next, the caterpillar changes into a chrysalis. Inside the chrysalis, the caterpillar slowly changes its body and becomes a butterfly. After this stage is finished, an adult butterfly comes out.
In the final stage, the adult butterfly lives for about six months. During this time, it travels long distances, mates, and lays eggs. Then, the life cycle starts again.
