Overall, the pineapple are grown in tropical climates for 12 months and then are converted into three different products including pineapple juice, canned pineapples and fresh pineapples depending on the size of the fruit.
First, pineapple crowns are planted in rows in fields. For optimal growth, crowns are spaced 26 cm apart from each other and grown in sunny climates with teamperatures ranging from 23 to 30 degrees Celsius. After 7 months, the fields are they with ethylene containing chemical to enhance the growth process. When the pineapples reach maturity after 5 months, weighing 2kg and measuring 30 cm in length, they are harvested and transported to the factory for processing.
At the factory, the ripe fruits are cleaned with water and processed into various products depending on their size. For small and medium-sized pineapples, the crown is trimmed off with a long knife. Small-sized pineapples are then sliced down to the bottom and sent to an extractor to collect juice to be finally packaged. Medium-sized ones are first cut into halves before being sliced and canned. In contrast, fresh, large-sized pineapples are waxed-coated and packed into crates before shipment fro export.
