The given diagram delineates the steps involved in catching prey by smaller and larger species of Venus Flytrap to utilize their digestive systems.
Overall, three major steps are present in handling of prey by small and large species.
In small trap species, the first step begins with leaves, which are opened to attract the insects. The insects sits on the leaves and as soon as they sit, the yellow coloured trigger leaves gets message to contract. In the next step, the trap snap shuts and the insect gets trapped between the leaves. Afterwards, the procedure of digestion starts with the release of digestive enzymes. In the final step, all the nutrients present in the insect gets absorbed by the plant.
The size of large species is bigger compared to small species. It includes the same method of attracting the prey. When the prey sits, the trigger cells gets an alert to engulf insect by closing the leaves. However, beacuse of the large space between two sides of leaf, even though the trap snaps are closed, the prey tries to escape from the leaves. The prey does not get catched and finally, the snaps are opened again for its next hunt.
