First of all, water from the reservoir flows into the intake. After that, water flows downward through the penstock, which spins the turbine once it reaches it. As the turbine spins, the generator produces electricity in the powerhouse, which will be sent to multiple households through long distance power lines. Water exits through a pipe that is connected to the river once it has spun the turbine. The cycle then repeats itself.
Overall, the process is simple and efficient in that electricity is generated by water which does not emit any harmful byproducts.
