The diagram illustrate the key construction features of two road tunnels located in different Australian cities.
Overall, the two tunnel differ considerably in the cost, construction time, dimension and traffic capacity. Although Tunnel A took longer and cost less to build, it is smaller and carries fewer vehicles than Tunnel B.
Starting with the construction process, Tunnel A was built over a much longer period, from 1986 to 1998, whereas Tunnel B was completed in just four years between 2002 and 2006. Despite its longer construction, Tunnel A required a substantially smaller budget of $555 million, compared with the $1.1 billion spent on Tunnel B. In terms of geological conditions, the first tunnel was surrounded mainly by sand, while the second one was excavated through stone and clay.
Regarding their physical characteristic, Tunnel A is shallower and shorter, measuring 1.5 meters in height and stretching 2.2 kilometers. By contrast, Tunnel B reaches a depth of 2.5 meters and extends for 3.6 kilometers. This difference in scale is reflected in traffic capacity: the first tunnel contains four lanes, whereas the second accommodates six, making it capable of handling a larger volume of vehicles.
