The given charts offer an overview of the number of railway passengers and on-time rates of trains between 2000 and 2009 in Japan.
Overall, passenger numbers remained relatively stable, and increased slightly in 2009 compared to 2000. In the first chart given, passenger numbers remained similar between 2000 and 2003, accounting for around 37 million people. After 2003, the number started to increase, reaching more than 45 million people in 2005. In the late 2000, the number remained similar at nearly 41 million people.
On the other hand, the percentage of trains running on time was only around 92% in 2000 and 93.5% in 2001. Between 2002 and 2004 it reached over the target of 95%, was around 95% in 2002, 95.5% in 2003, and 96% in 2004. The on-time rate dropped dramatically and raised back again, reaching nearly 97% in both 2008 and 2009.
