The upper table illustrates how the number of inhabitants of New York City had changed from 1800 to 2000. The remaining tables give an overview of this change in five districts of the city, namely Manhattan, Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens, Staten Island. Overall, a dramatic increase in population has been registered, Manhattan have lost his popularity whereas the other districts have gained it over the period.
Looking at the first table, the number of inhabitants has rocketed from 79,216 in 1800 to approximately 8,000,000 in 2000. In 1800 the large majority of the total population lived in Manhattan which accounted for 76% while the other districts almost reached a quarter of the total share.
In 1900, a little less than 3,500,000 people lived in New York City, being almost equally distributed between Manhattan and the other districts. Indeed, 54% of the citizens were in Manhattan while the remaining percentage, namely 46, was sprod over Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens and Staten Island. Finally, in 2000, the amount of population that inhabited Manhattan further decreased to just one fifth of the total while the other districts were chosen by 81% of the New Yorkers as the place to live.
