The charts demonstrate information about changes in the total number of citizens in New York City as well as the population and as percentage of total population in five different boroughs of the city between 1800 and 2000.
Overall, the number of total residents of the city and population together with total number of citizens in percentages from “Other” districts (which is Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens, Staten Island) increased, whereas quantities as percentage in Manhattan decreased.
The total population of New York steadily rose during the whole period. People numbered 79,216 in 1800. By 1900 this number grew to 3,437,202. There were 8,009,185 citizens in the city by 2000.
In Manhattan, in 1800 there were 60,515 people – 76% of total population, in 1900 population made up 1,850,093 – 54% of total quantities, in 2000 this number became 1,538,096 – 19% of total population. Despite the fact that over the following years the population increased, as a percentage of total citizens it decreased.
“Other” districts in 1800 numbered 18,701 people- 24% of total population, in 1900 individuals grew to 1,587,109 – 46 % of total inhabitants, in 2000 this number turned into 6,471,089 – 81% of total population.
