The bar chart below illustrates the various transport modes used for commuting to work in a European city during the years from 1960 to 2000.
Overall, it can be seen from the chart that there was a significant transformation in commuting preferences over the period given. Private car use has risen, eclipsing all other transportation modes. Moreover, cycling and walking declined, indicating a clear shift towards car dominance in transport use.
To begin, walking and cycling had the highest percentages compared to the other modes of transport, accounting for almost 40% and around 25% respectively. By the end of 2000, they both had fallen sharply to less than 10 percent.
Turning to buses, this method had a floating trend. In the beginning, it had 17% and reached a peak of 26% in 1980. However, in the end, there was a decline again to a similar rate as at the start.
