In 1996, private cars had the highest number of registrations, with 19.4 million, followed by those of “all other” and motorcycles, standing at 1.2 million and 1.2 million, respectively. In addition, the number of lorry registrations was 0.5 million, which exceeded the total for buses, coaches and taxis by 0.4 million.
In the next decade, there was a significant growth in the registration number of private cars which increased to 24 million. Meanwhile, a similar pattern is observed in the registration number of “all other”, which rose by 0.7 million to 1.9 million, surpassing that of lorries and motorcycles by 1.5 million and 1.3 million, respectively. However, the total number of registrations for buses, coaches, and taxis remained relatively stable, with the lowest number of 0.1 million.
