The pie chart depicts the percentage of students coming from different economic status in 1991 and the bar chart illustrates the total number of students in the UK universities from 1991 to 2001. Looking from an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that the majority of students were from middle income families while the total students in the UK universities experienced an increasing trend within 10 years.
There were three types of students based on their family economic background which are low, moderate and high income. Most students came from families with moderate economic levels accounting for 62%. The high income category was almost a half from the moderate one. Additionally, students from low income families were the least proportion in the UK universities, just only 8%.
The total students enrolling the UK universities stood at roughly 1.1 million people in 1991. It continued to increase slightly over 3 periods from 1993 to 1997. After that, the total number of students at universities in the UK reached a peak of around 2.1 million people in 1999. In addition, there was a decline of about one hundred students in the last year.
