The charts show the number of university students in the United Kingdom, between 1991 and 2001, as well as information on the economic background of their families in 1991.
Overall, most of the students came from middle income backgrounds, while low income families were the lowest to be accounted for. In addition, the total number of students grew steadily throughout the period and reached its peak in 1999 before slightly declining in 2001.
The types of family economic background presented that the majority of the students lived in middle class families, with 62%. However, people who grew up with high income were the second largest proportion, with 30%. Lastly, low income families showed the lowest proportion, with only 8% of students.
Furthermore, the numbers rose steadily from around 1,000,000 in 1991, to above 1,500,000 in 1997. Moreover, the number of students increased in 1999 and reached its highest, with more than 2 million students, before decreasing slowly in 2001 to 2 million students.
