The diagram illustrates the process of producing sugar from sugar cane.Overall, there are seven main stages, beginning with the cultivation of sugar cane and ending with the drying and cooling of the final sugar crystalls.
First, sugar cane is grown in fields for approximately 12 to 18 months, untill it reaches maturty.Once it is ready to be harvested, there are two possible methods of collection. The cane can either be cut manually by workers or harvested using a mechanical machine.
In the third stage, the harvested sugar cane is crushed in a large crusher, which extracts the juice from the cane. The resulting liquid then goes through a limestone filter, where it is purified. After this, the purified juice is heated and passed through an evaporator, which removes excess water and turns the juice into a thicker syrup.
Next, the concentrated liquid is placed in a centrifuge. This machine separates the sugar crystals from the remaining liquid. Finally, the sugar crystals are dried and cooled, producing the finished sugar. Thus, the whole process involves a combination of agricultral, mechanical and chemical stages before the sugar is ready for use.
