The line graph compares sugar production and consumption in India between 2001 and 2011. Overall, sugar consumption increased gradually and remained relatively stable, whereas production fluctuated considerably. Production was higher than consumption in most years, although two figures were equal in 2003 and consumption exceeded output in 2005 and 2009.
In 2001, India produced approximately 27 units of sugar, compared with consumption of around 23. Both figures then stood 25 in 2003. Over the following years, however, production fell sharply to just under 19, while consumption declined only slightly to about 24.
Production then rose dramatically to a peak of roughly 34 in 2007, placing it well above consumption at 25. This increase was followed by another steep fall, with output dropping to around 22 in 2009, while consumption continued its gradual rise to approximately 26. By 2011, production had recovered to 30, and consumption had also increased to just under 28.
